After having attempted robbery with a fake gun T.J. Parsell believes he will be sent to a minimum security camp for first time offenders however he then finds out he will be placed inside the walls of a maximum security prison. The year was 1978, after having already grown up with a troubled child hood with the divorce of his parents not much could go worse at the time. The next 4 years Parsell would spend in the prison would change his life forever. Haven't ever being in such a large amount of trouble with such a huge consequence, Parsell could do nothing but hope for the best when he was told he would be placed in the Michigan Riverside Correctional Facility.
Parsell was introduced to many inmates which would soon change his entire life style. Due to his to little knowledge of things ran in the prison and its decorum, it would cause Parsell to end up giving the wrong answer when asked a question which led to being raped several times. To help get some protection Parsell would have to find a "man" which then was Slide Step. However after becoming close with his man he was then transferred over to Michigan Training Unit. Once again being unfamiliar with the decorum and after having spread information on his sexual position Parsell was again raped by the inmates. Parsell then meets an inmate called Paul which helped him survive the prison sentence becoming his man. Once again Parsell is then transferred to the Michigan Riverside Correctional Facility where he finally feels safe knowing how things run and having his man alongside him.
4. " I would give anything to bask in the glory of some ones' affection, to see their face light up when I walk into a room, but Slide Step was a black man and this was prison" ( Parsell 269)
5. Having been in prison for so long Parsell relaizes, he really needs the love he can only receive from those who truly love him the most, his family. This quotes describes how terribly he misses home and how he understands that the "love" he recieves is everything but love when the true love is what he had with his family before going to prison.
